Department of Folklore Studies |
Folklore today has developed into a highly specialized area of research. The Department of Folklore has taken up projects of compilation of both oral and written texts and interpretation of the same from an interdisciplinary perspective. The Department is functioning with the intention of finding and disseminating knowledge, which are unrecognized or hitherto marginalized (what can be called as desi, local knowledge). Field work, compilation, analysis, dialogue with the scholars in the field are the methods adopted to achieve the objectives of the Department. The Department is acting as a platform for people who are working in the field of Folklore. It offers M.A. Ph.D, Integrated courses on Folklore. stone temple architecture, which is conducive to the art forms taught in the Department. The students of the Department have conducted various Art exhibitions all over Karnataka. The creative products of the students have been displayed in the campus winning acclaim for the students. This Department organises Master Degree Programme on Visual Arts at Vidyaranya Campus.

Department of Music and Dance |
The Department offers training in traditional and classical music both Hindustani and Karnataka style in Gurukula model of teaching. The Department three-year undergraduate course. The Department imparts skills to students through lectures/teaching/ learning, practical demonstration by the faculty, and also by the professionals in the field, hands-on training, discussion etc. The students of the department have given several performances all over Karnataka and have won accolades. The Department regularly organizes programs.

Department of History conducts research on the history of Karnataka. The Department has brought out a comprehensive history of Karnataka in seven volumes and an Encyclopedia of History in Kannada. It has also come out with a series on various social movements of post-reunification Karnataka. Apart from research it also conducts teaching and guidance for research programs. The Department is involved in the present academic debates in history and has contributed to the debates by organizing workshops, seminars, and conferences on issues such as on methodology and historiography, local history, regional history, oral history.

Department of Archaeology & Ancient History |
The Department aims to understand our past through surveying, analyzing historical and archeological sites of Karnataka. It has taken up this task by preparing descriptive and analytical index of temples, forts, tanks, architectural and historical monuments found in various districts of Karnataka. It has also taken up projects to understand some of the ancient sects found in Karnataka through which it tries to understand the architectural achievements of the earlier period, its irrigation system, religion, economy, polity of ancient Karnataka.

The Department takes up compilation and analysis of epigraphs available in Karnataka and Kannada epigraphs available elsewhere. The Department is bringing out volumes related to epigraphs of each district of Karnataka. Similarly other language epigraphs available in Karnataka have been compiled. It has also published the Kannada epigraphs available in other regions. As epigraphs are important sources for reconstructing history or for historical studies, the faculty of the Department undertakes projects to glean out historical facts from epigraphs.

Department of Tribal Studies |
The objective of the Department is to conduct an extensive research into the lives of the Tribes in Karnataka. The Department apart from conducting ethnographic, field work based documentation and analysis of the socio-economic life of the tribes, records and publishes their knowledge and literature which is available only in the oral form. The Department has published a series of oral epics thus collected, which has won the appreciation of the academic world. The Department is housed in a mini-campus called Giri-Seeme (Hilly-region) modeled on tribal culture. The campus has become a must-see for tourists. The Department is recognized by the UGC to carry out research under the Special Assistance Program (SAP). It also has a mini-museum of tribal culture.

Department of Development Studies |
The Department conducts research in the area of development studies focusing on economy, policy suggestions, which are in tune with the historically formed socio-economic and cultural life of the people. It lays emphasis on multidisciplinary perspectives both in defining the thrust areas and also in opting methodologies of inquiry. These researches have policy implications at immediate operative level as well as for long term development strategy formulations. The Department also takes active interest in equipping the marginalised people with necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to make use of the existing development facilities to their benefit. The specific objectives of the Department are – To take up interdisciplinary research on development issues, to conduct training programs to people, people’s representatives and officials connected with the development policy making and execution, to disseminate knowledge on development issues through different media and to work as development consultants.
