Department of Manuscriptology

 

Since its inception in 1996, the department is making efforts to collect all kinds of manuscripts and protect them to know our past. The activity involves four stages: 1.Collecting the Manuscripts 2. Editing 3. Studying and 4. Publishing. Now the department has plans to digitalize the present and also the future collection. The department has in its collection more than 3,000 valuable manuscripts written in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marati and Sanskrit. The collection includes valuable works like Nannis Bharata Halayudha Stora, Kumara Sambhava, Shivadhikya Ratnavli, and interpretation of  Magha Kavya. Rare manuscripts like Sanskrit language but Kannada script; Kannada language but Telugu script; Telugu language Kannada script are also in the collection and some of them are colorful, figurative.

These manuscripts are important in reconstructing the history of not only Karnataka but of South India. Out of 3,000 manuscripts 800 manuscripts have been catalogued and published as a 2-volume descriptive catalogue. The catalogue contains details about the scribe, script, writer, the patron etc. We have published some of them in print form like Kumara Ramana Sangatya, Vishnusharamana Panchatantra Kathegala Sara Sangra, Tatvapadagalu, Svarava chanagalu, Jainu Haadugalu, Karasthala Sahitya, Haleya Lavanigalu which were hitherto unavailable, Department also offers research courses.

 

This department has a collection of over 2000 different manuscripts and the process of digitization of all the manuscripts is going on by this we can get the copy of manuscripts in form of CD's and in human readable format.
