Campus

Kannada University unlike other universities did not develop from being a college or a P.G. centre of another University. It started from the scratch. When the decision to establish the University was taken, the Government of Karnataka nominated eminent Kannada writer Dr. Chandrashekar Kambar as the Special officer. There were no buildings or any other infrastructure. The University started functioning in the old-stone mantapas of the Hampi. Then Dr. Chandrashekar Kambar became the first vice-chancellor and invited eminent scholars working in various Universities to work in Kannada University. With the support of a small group not numbering more than eleven, the University began in 1992.  In order to facilitate research, scholars from the other University were invited on deputation to handle research projects by the University. Similarly visiting faculty were invited to direct research projects.  The recruitment of first batch of lecturers began in 1995. The present faculty strength is only from the end of 1997. So it is essential to keep these factors in mind before assessing the achievements of the University in the past ten years.

The University moved from stone-mantapas of Hampi to the present campus only in 1994. The present campus of Kannada University spans a hilly terrain of 700 acres. It is named Vidyaranya following the name of the "founder-Guru" of Vijayanagara Empire. The newly constructed buildings of Kannada University blend with the architecture of Hampi historical structures to be one with the ambience of it. Akshara (etymologically the one which can not be erased) the letter, is the name of the library building. Another library building "Sarvajna" is coming up with the aid from UGC. University is also planning to have one exclusive library for Karnataka studies. Kriyashakthi, another important guru in the history of Vijayanagara Empire, is the name of administrative building. Bhuvana Vijaya, The abode of Victory, is the indoor auditorium for academic and cultural activities. Navaranga is an open-air auditorium resembling Greek theatre. Tripadi (a metrical form of three lines), Kudala Sangama (Confluence), Thunga-Bhadra (Name of the river which runs through Hampi), Ghatikalaya (higher seat of learning), Kesiraja (Name of a Kannada grammarian), Harihara (13th century Kannada Poet), Nagavarma  (Translator) Allama (12th century vachana poet), Akka (12th century women vachana poet) are some of the academic buildings in the campus.  Giri-Sime (Tribal village) is a mini campus, which houses the department of Tribal studies. * Kayakada Mane (The Workhouse) is the Publishing Center of the University called Prasaranga. Sri-Shaila, the guesthouse provides hospitality to the guests and invitees.  Jakkana Mantapa houses Adhyayananga the academic-administrative center of the University. Manasollasa (Joy of the mind) is where the Vice-chancellor resides.  The faculty and other employees stay at Nityotsava (Everyday festival).  The campus is a delight to the eyes with these structures situated amidst natural forest and parks.

It is not only the outer appearance of the Campus that delights the eyes but also the matching activities of the University, the inner strength of it. The activities of the University have been analyzed criterion-wise below.
